They host events across the world and we are honored they decided to visit us over New Years. We asked them a few questions about their inspirations and insights. Here’s what they had to say:

FROM PATRICIA:
QUESTION: What inspired you to start a yoga practice ?

It was the early eighties. I was into drugs and alcohol, trying to bring calm and peace into a chaotic life. I was also working as a nurse at that time and developed high blood pressure. I was 29, too young and revolutionary to take the allopathic track. I turned to yoga asana then to meditation.

QUESTION: Who inspired you to become a yoga teacher ?

My practice. After taking an 8 week yoga course, I began my own practice and substance abuse fell away. I wanted to shift from taking care of sick people to helping myself and others stay well.

QUESTION: If you could study with any yoga teacher past or present, who would it
be and why?

Ramana Maharishi. He taught the direct path similar to the deepest aspects of the 8 fold path…svadhaya(self-study) and isvarapranidhana(surrender to God). His teaching centered around the question “Who am I”…he taught mostly in and from silence.

QUESTION: What are some of the gems that you’ve gathered from your yoga practice ?

Silence brings strength and insight
Being present in the moment brings stillness and emotional stability
Recognizing the mystery behind creation re-orients my life
Emotional stability arises when I am with life as it is and not as I want it to be
When I stop forcing my body, cellular listening arises naturally
Being open to change as work, relationships, food, how I spend my personal time are influenced as the body/mind becomes sensitive and subtle
Breath awareness directly influences the nervous system
When I trust the support of the earth, tension is released
Gentleness is the environment in which holding patterns unfold
Cultivating a personal practice with a periodic retreat or class has encouraged discipline, confidence and the wisdom of my own knowing
I am more than this body
Be still and look within for the deepest wisdom

QUESTION: If you could pick your next incarnation who would you be ?

Tara, the female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism

QUESTION: What is your greatest dream that you will likely manifest ?

Being happy with my life as it is

QUESTION: What’s your favorite meditation CD ?

Sitting alone down at my cabin in the field in the slience of early morning

QUESTION: What’s your favorite yoga book ?

This by Papaji

Naked Song by Lalla, a 13th century Kashmiri Shivite poet

FROM SURYA:

QUESTION: What inspired you to start a yoga practice ?
I had been involved in meditation for awhile and was in a time of transition in my life, not knowing what was next. Wanted to bring another dimension to my practice of meditation and came across “Light on Yoga” by B.K.S.Iyengar in a local library.

The times when I embrace all of life just as it is.
