Mexico Yoga Retreat with Sarah Cook and Lily Dwyer Begg

January 12th - 18th, 2020

About the Retreat

YES! That is what we are saying since we decided to build this awesome retreat together, and we hope you will say yes to joining us in paradise for a week of replenishing body mind and spirit. Start 2020 off right by embracing the warmth of Puerto Morelos, and your beloved yoga community for a 6 night, 7 day yoga retreat with Sarah Cook and Lily Dwyer Begg. Practice yoga to your heart’s content, build new friendships, adventure in the Mayan Riviera, and refill your cup lounging on white sand. Soak in turquoise seawater, read in a hammock, or get pampered with body treatments. In planning this retreat we wanted: warmth, water, a gorgeous practice studio, good food, and nice rooms, all within quick travel distance. Cancun is a 3.5 hour direct flight from the Baltimore/DC area and roundtrip tickets out of our area for our dates are currently just under $400! Spend your time on the yoga mat and not in a cramped airplane seat!

PRACTICE WITH US! 6 – 120 minute hot vinyasa am classes 4 – 90 minute not-hot pm workshops You can expect the precisely cued, carefully curated, strong, athletic, powerful, soulful practices that you might have come to love with Sarah and Lily in the studio back home. With this special co-led retreat you will also often have an extra set of teacher’s eyes and hands in the room offering hands-on assists and one-on-one coaching. You will be practicing in a consistent group for a week with two senior teachers who will really get to know your practice and support your growth and confidence on the mat. Each morning’s practice theme/focus will be carefully planned ahead of time so that there is a nice array of practices that complement, build off one another and do not overlap. One morning you may experience a well-rounded strong vinyasa practice with a focus on backbends, while another may focus on forward folds and detoxifying twists. Each morning will begin with a 120 minute class to enliven body, mind, and spirit. In the morning we will move into a flow state and a moving meditation, creating a powerful container as we move and breathe together and awaken our connection to spirit. Though our morning practices are strong, all levels are truly welcome and included. Rest when you need! With two teachers on deck we will mindfully attune to each student’s present level to help you thrive and come alive in your practice. Afternoons will shift focus – some are gentle and restorative, while others are not. Each afternoon is planned as a 90-minute workshop presenting different experiences and topics that highlight Sarah and Lily’s areas of expertise and passion that we are most excited to share with you. There will be two afternoons “off” (without the afternoon yoga practice) to lay low, continue daytime adventures, indulge, and play. This down time to relax, rejuvenate, down-regulate, and digest your new experiences and practices is important to the integrity of your retreat experience.

Sarah loves to teach a practice rooted in the clarity of strong alignment with plenty of room for spirit and play. She regularly incorporates asana variation, sacred geometry, pranayama, kriya, poetry, philosophy… One of her first teachers would always say, “Yoga will change your body, then your mind, then your heart.” This is the summary of Sarah’s yoga love affair; coming to yoga, like many others, as a way to get active, falling in love and then beginning to teach full-time in 2009.

Diverse in interest and study, Sarah is a 500 hour Jivan Yoga certified teacher. She has taught in both 200 hour and 300 hour teacher trainings, serving as a mentor in Yogaworks 300 Hour Mentorship program for the past three years. In addition to the 300 Hour Training at Baltimore Yoga Village, she has studied and trained with Katonah Yoga, Ana Forrest and Buti Yoga. She has also been strongly influenced by Elena Brower, Christina Sell, Dice Iida-Klein and Vivian Campagna. Truly, she remains an eternal student.

Activites

Optional Excursions (additional fee applies):

Cenotes
The Mexican Riviera is flush with these beautiful underground pools and a trip here isn’t complete without a dip in these refreshing waters. There are multiple cenotes to visit that are much less crowded than those in the Tulum area and only about 30min away by car. Find tranquility below ground or liven you experience with a cenote/zip line combination. Both options are available and booking at least a day in advance is recommended
Snorkeling & Snuba
The biodiversity on the protect reef in the Mexican Riviera is stunning. Take off for an afternoon when the sun lights up the corals, tropical fish and sponges and search for turtles or reef sharks. Snorkelers can float above it all while snuba divers (no certification needed) can swim down into the tropical traffic. Either option will highlight why this area is protected and turned into a National Marine Park. Yogis can walk to the beach and take a 5min stroll to reach the operator. This natural oasis is literally steps from our retreat center.
Scuba
If you’re a diver there’s twice the opportunity here, you can dive in the coral reefs or, for something a little different, take a cavern or cenote dive. Seasonally the more adventurous (crazy?) yogis can also try a bull shark dive…eek! Tons of diving options await the intrepid.
Akumal Sea Turtle Snorkel
The warm Caribbean waters off of the Mexican Riviera boast sea turtle populations year-round. You can outfit with a dive shop to snorkel with these lovelies or head out with your own gear and see if you get lucky.
Coba Ruins
The Mayan ruins at Coba is one of the few sites in the Yucatan that is still relatively unrestored. Many of these ancient buildings are the same as when they were rediscovered in 1890. The beautiful location is less hectic and touristy than other Mayan sites and is certainly worth the day trip.
Casa Om Spa
Whether you’re looking for an amazing massage or energy work, The Travel Yogi team can tell you first hand how amazing the team at Casa Om is. Please be prepared to book early to secure a spot. Once the word gets out from the first few massages, they’ll book up quickly!
Playa del Carmen
Take a shopping trip, have a great meal, or just enjoy people watching on a trip to Playa del Carmen. This is a fun tourist spot where you can shop for anything from cheap souvenirs to boutique items.
