About the Retreat
Escape the ordinary and find a way to balance everything, playfully!
We will be exploring the past and present of the jewel that is the Mexican Rivera and dive into the surreal world of the cenotes. We’ll balance the discovery of the local culture through food, interaction and local treasures alongside awakening practices that add in the mind-heart-body connection.
Whakapaingia will lead you in a strong and calming playful vinyasa flow every morning, ensuring you stretch your body and your mind. And whether on a free day or a big adventure out, evening practices will explore balance with the playful integration of acrobatic yoga and Thai massage. You will explore balance in fun weightless inversions and arm balances and float through this warm sunshine, warm heart and warm culture retreat.
The fun of acro-inducing laughter and gravity-freedom set the tone for a week that infuses your mind, body and spirit with the magic combination of great yoga, great food and the great culture of the Mexican Rivera.

About the Teacher
“Whaka” is the spiritual heartbeat of Koha Yoga and the Acro Revolution tribe. Having always been a warrior and athlete, Whaka found the healing power of acropeutics and the joy of acrobatics when he was living in the US as a rugby player.
In 2005, he started his healing journey after giving up his perception that yoga “was for girls” and not for tough guys. A few months into his practice, Whaka noticed his body recovered from tough rugby matches without the usual drugs or surgery. Through the path of yoga, he learned to heal himself. Whaka began to give this gift of healing to others by becoming a certified yoga teacher and thai massage practitioner.
Whaka found acro serendipitously on a beach when a women approached him and asked him if he wanted to fly. That woman became his wife, Sara. In one day Whaka found his life long passion and the person he would share that gift to the world with for the rest of his life. Whaka and Sara founded Koha Yoga in 2009 with the intension of sharing their passion and knowledge as ‘Koha’ is the Maori word for gift. Whaka and Sara travel around the world with their daughter Tahi, helping people discover the gifts of trust, joy, laughter, play, balance and release through acro, acropeutics, yoga and paddle-boarding.

Optional Excursions (additional fee applies):
The Mexican Riviera is flush with these beautiful underground pools and a trip here isn’t complete without a dip in these refreshing waters. There are multiple cenotes to visit that are much less crowded than those in the Tulum area and only about 30min away by car. Find tranquility below ground or liven you experience with a cenote/zip line combination. Both options are available and booking at least a day in advance is recommended.
Snorkeling & Snuba
The biodiversity on the protect reef in the Mexican Riviera is stunning. Take off for an afternoon when the sun lights up the corals, tropical fish and sponges and search for turtles or reef sharks. Snorkelers can float above it all while snuba divers (no certification needed) can swim down into the tropical traffic. Either option will highlight why this area is protected and turned into a National Marine Park. Yogis can walk to the beach and take a 5min stroll to reach the operator. This natural oasis is literally steps from our retreat center.
If you’re a diver there’s twice the opportunity here, you can dive in the coral reefs or, for something a little different, take a cavern or cenote dive. Seasonally the more adventurous (crazy?) yogis can also try a bull shark dive…eek! Tons of diving options await the intrepid.
Akumal Sea Turtle Snorkel
The warm Caribbean waters off of the Mexican Riviera boast sea turtle populations year-round. You can outfit with a dive shop to snorkel with these lovelies or head out with your own gear and see if you get lucky.
The Mayan ruins at Coba is one of the few sites in the Yucatan that is still relatively unrestored. Many of these ancient buildings are the same as when they were rediscovered in 1890. The beautiful location is less hectic and touristy than other Mayan sites and is certainly worth the day trip.
Casa Om Spa
Whether you’re looking for an amazing massage or energy work, The Travel Yogi team can tell you first hand how amazing the team at Casa Om is. Please be prepared to book early to secure a spot. Once the word gets out from the first few massages, they’ll book up quickly!
